Happy summer! Now that testing is over, I hope everyone takes some time to relax and enjoy your families and that you get a few minutes to rest! This upcoming year will bring some significant changes in student assessment, and evaluation of both teachers and principals. A new guidebook has been issued by the LDOE that describes many processes that principals may choose to use. LAP has been working with the LDOE to make sure the information is relevant and will be a resource to principals. We will have a sess...
At the April 15th BESE meeting the BESE Board approved a Standards review committee. LAP is allowed to nominate 4 principals and a minimum of 1 will be selected to serve on the committee. In other action, Superintendent White discussed 3 documents that are coming out --- The HS Planning Guide, The Early Childhood Guidebook and the Principals Guidebook. We have some questions about the Principals Guidebook and we have scheduled a meeting next week to discuss our concerns. Please email me or call me if you have...
Many thanks to principals and others who sent emails and made phone calls to BESE board members to ask that the 2 new recommendations made by Supt. White and his staff be rejected and sent back to the ACT 240 Subcommittee. As a result of these actions BESE members did not approve a set of evaluation changes suggested by Superintendent White that were not part of the Act 240 Subcommittee recommendations. But because they were not vetted by the subcommittee, Board Member Jay Guillot moved that they be returned to the panel for further study...
I wanted to provide you with a copy of the final recommendations that will go to BESE on March 5th and 6th and to provide details about each recommendation. The meeting took about 5 hours—and I do think we made major progress--- it is not our exact recommendations but some are very close to the 6 recommendations that I proposed at the last ACT 240 Subcommittee meeting. The LDOE brought 4 recommendations and they were edited along with 2 that we added for a total of 6 recommendations. See the attachment for the complete wo...
The Act 240 Subcommittee met on January 5th, 2015 to discuss potential revisions to the Teacher and administrator Evaluation Process. One thing that was very clear is that there will be a major shift for principals as the following items are being proposed:
Principals should set their goals based on school performance score improvement
Support for School Leaders
Expand the TAP Initiative
Develop a Statewide Principal Mentorship Program
Also, I proposed the following items as recommendations to revise the current evaluatio...
National Principals' Month Proclamation
At a time when education leaders are dealing with some of the most difficult issues seen in decades we are thankful for the jobs that education leaders across this state are taking on! Principals provide the mobilizing force behind any school reform effort and we hope that National Principals month provides an opportunity for communities to recognize and honor the contribution of all school principals and assistant principals at all grade levels to the success of students in Louisiana.
I am posting an article that gives the latest details on the ongoing debate between Superintendent White and Governor Jindal. We will continue to monitor the discussion and will provide you with information as soon as it is available regarding the testing and assessments that will be used for 2014-15. We also will have a very important Accountability Commission meeting this Monday July 21st at 1pm in the Thomas Jefferson Room at the LDOE. This meeting will include discussion of the Act 240 which will discuss the current ...
On Wednesday June 18th, 2014 Governor Bobby Jindal issued a proclamation that contained the following items:
1. Issued an executive order that instructs the Louisiana Department of Education to conduct a competitive process to purchase a new assessment and which prohibits the expenditure of funds on cooperative group purchasing organizations and interstate agreements;
