School funding resolution set for hearing on Tuesday
A state Senate committee is set to consider a $3.5 billion spending plan for public schools on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
The proposal, Senate Concurrent Resolution 23, has been the subject of controversy for the past week.
The Senate Education Committee initially shelved the measure because the panel concluded that it needed reworking because of a state Supreme Court ruling.
But the state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education submitted a slightly different version the next day, which BESE officials said anticipated changes because of the court decision.
The hearing is expected to feature criticism that BESE needs to hold another hearing, then send over a new spending plan and proposed changes in how the state aids special education students.
Senate Education Committee Chairman Conrad Appel, R-Metairie, said attorneys have reviewed the new proposal and are satisfied that it meets state rules.
The state aid goes through a funding formula called the Minimum Foundation Program.
