So hard to believe that 2016 is here! We are very hopeful that our new Governor—Jon Bel Edwards will improve the Education Environment in Louisiana. He has been a true friend to principals and educators in the past and we look forward to working with him to make education a #1 priority for the state! We are working hard to make sure we provide site based administrators with a voice in education policy! LAP is representing principals on the accountability commission, the standards commission and the Board of Regents Advisory Council, as well as speaking on important topics during BESE meetings and during the legislative session.
We are pleased to announce that the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) was signed into law by President Obama! This replaces NCLB and will:
· Eliminate AYP and one-size-fits-all accountability measures
· Allow states to reserve up to 3 percent of their Title II funds for school leader activities
· Authorize school leader recruitment and support programs to prepare principals to work in high-need schools
· Provide funding to states for comprehensive birth−grade 12 literacy initiatives
· Allow districts to use Title IV funding for education technology, including professional learning opportunities for principals and teachers
Thanks to all of you who contacted your congressman and representatives to ask them to include the above guidelines in the new law! The Accountability Commission will be meeting on January 29th to discuss the impact of the new ESSA law on our current accountability system. We encourage you to participate and feel free to provide any suggestions for improving the current policy to me prior to the meeting. My email is email@example.com
LAP is working with the LDOE on the Principal of the Year selection process to increase the number of participants and winners. The forms and process are located on the LAP website and applications are due January 29, 2016. The application for principals is online and much easier to complete this year! It would be great if we had an LAP/NAESP/NASSP finalist. Please take the time to apply if you have been nominated by your district! Principals of the Year serve as representatives on state committees and provide the best opportunity to share with others the uniqueness of our profession!
Finally, we are only as strong as our members make us! We hope that you will encourage your co-workers to join our organization—this will be a difficult legislative session for all due to the significant budget issues that our state faces. When we testify before legislative committees it is extremely helpful to share the number of principals/assistant principals/ site based administrators who are members of our organization. Please join with LAP in making sure that your voice is heard during the upcoming legislative session.
We appreciate all that you do and we wish everyone a very Happy New Year!
